
Umrongso, July 24, 2026: The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Umrongso Regional Committee, participated in the Public Hearing on the Environmental Clearance proposal of Star Cement, organized by the Assam Pollution Control Board at Boro Lokhindong on 24 July 2026.
The AAGSU delegation was present under the guidance of Central Executive Member Shri Dilip Chetri. Representing the organization, Shri Mohan Chetri, President of AAGSU Umrongso Regional Committee, addressed the gathering and voiced the concerns, aspirations, and expectations of the local people regarding the proposed project.
During his address, he emphasized that development should be sustainable and must be accompanied by environmental conservation, protection of the rights of local communities, employment opportunities for local youth, and the overall welfare of the people living in the project-affected areas. He urged the concerned authorities and the company to ensure that development benefits the local population without compromising their livelihood or the environment.
On the occasion, the AAGSU delegation submitted a memorandum to the officials of Star Cement, highlighting several important issues concerning the interests and well-being of the local community. The memorandum called upon the company to strictly comply with environmental regulations, safeguard the rights of the affected people, and undertake developmental initiatives that would create long-term benefits for the local residents.
The participation of AAGSU in the public hearing reflected its continued commitment to protecting the interests of the people while supporting responsible and sustainable development. The organization reaffirmed that it will continue to represent the genuine concerns and aspirations of local communities and work towards ensuring transparency, accountability, and meaningful public participation in all development projects affecting the region.
