AAGSU Haflong Organises Half Marathon on Gandhi Jayanti with the Message “Run for a Drug-Free Society”

Haflong, 2 October 2026: On the special occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Haflong Regional Committee, in collaboration with the AAGSU Dima Hasao District Committee, organised a Half Marathon under the inspiring theme “Run for a Drug-Free Society” at Haflong Boat House on 2nd October 2026.

The event was organised with the objective of promoting physical fitness, a healthy and active lifestyle and awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse, particularly among the younger generation. The programme also sought to strengthen social unity and collective responsibility among the different communities of Dima Hasao.

The Half Marathon was organised along the route Haflong Boat House – Jatinga Zero Point – Haflong Boat House and witnessed enthusiastic participation from hundreds of people belonging to different age groups, tribes, communities and social backgrounds. The diverse participation reflected the spirit of unity in diversity and the collective commitment towards building a healthier society.

The programme was graced by several distinguished guests, including Shri Donoainon Thaosen, Hon’ble Executive Member, DHAC; Smti Probita Johori, Hon’ble Executive Member, DHAC; Shri John Paithong, Hon’ble Member of Autonomous Council and Spokesperson, DHAC; Shri Hrishikesh Upadhyaya, Joint Secretary, DHAC; Shri Keshav Sharma, Vice Chairman, Haflong Municipal Board; Shri Aching Jeme, Social Worker; Shri Uttam Gharti, President, AAGSU Dima Hasao District Committee; Shri Bibekananda Joishi, General Secretary, AAGSU Dima Hasao District Committee; Shri Sidharth Pandey, Advisor, AAGSU Dima Hasao District Committee; Shri Bhim Bahadur Chetri, President, Assam Gorkha Sammelan; Shri Raju Joishi, Social Worker; and Shri Raju Pokhrel, Forest Ranger.

The inaugural programme commenced with the felicitation of the Chief Guest and distinguished guests, followed by a Shradhanjali ceremony in honour of Mahatma Gandhi. The dignitaries paid floral tributes and participated in the ceremonial lighting of the lamp as a mark of respect to the Father of the Nation.

Addressing the gathering, the invited guests highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy body, a healthy mind and a healthy society. They particularly emphasised the need to prevent drug abuse and to work collectively towards protecting the younger generation from substance abuse and creating a drug-free society in Dima Hasao.

Before the commencement of the race, participants took part in a collective warm-up session. The organisers briefed them about the designated route, race discipline and safety measures. Participants were also encouraged to maintain sportsmanship and discipline throughout the event.

The Half Marathon was officially flagged off in the presence of the distinguished guests. AAGSU volunteers were deployed at strategic locations along the route to provide drinking water and necessary assistance to the participants. Volunteers also helped monitor the race and ensure its smooth and orderly conduct.

Adequate arrangements were made to deal with any emergency situation, including the availability of an ambulance. Personnel from Assam Police and Assam Rifles also extended valuable assistance and cooperation in ensuring the safety and smooth conduct of the event.

The organisers carefully recorded the finishing positions and results of the participants. In the General Category, Shri Mikhi Bharti of Guwahati secured the first position, Shri Binesh Dibragede of Umrangso secured the second position, and Shri Kumbha Deuri of Dibrugarh secured the third position.

In the Female Category, Ms. Paungale Zeme secured the first position, Ms. Juhitha Porbosa secured the second position and Ms. Chubuile Zeme secured the third position.

In the Under-15 Category, Master Anch Chetri received the Special Under-15 Prize.

The winners and distinguished finishers were felicitated with cash prizes, medals and certificates. Certificates were also distributed among the participants as a token of appreciation for their enthusiastic participation and encouragement towards maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shri Bishal Joishi, President, AAGSU Haflong Regional Committee. He expressed sincere gratitude to all the distinguished guests and dignitaries for their presence and support. He also extended special appreciation to the Assam Rifles, Assam Police, AAGSU volunteers, organisers, participants and everyone who contributed to the successful conduct of the Half Marathon.

The “Run for a Drug-Free Society” Half Marathon successfully brought together people from different communities and age groups on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The programme conveyed an important message about fitness, sports, social awareness and collective responsibility in combating drug abuse.

The event concluded on a positive note with a renewed call for greater community participation in promoting a healthy lifestyle and protecting the younger generation from drugs and other harmful intoxicants, contributing towards a healthier, stronger and drug-free Dima Hasao.
