Haflong, 15 August 2026: The birth anniversary of Captain Ram Singh Thakuri, the renowned Gorkha freedom fighter, musician and Bandmaster of the Indian National Army (INA), was observed with due respect and reverence on 15 August 2026 at Gorkha Bhawan, Upper Bagetar, Haflong.
The commemorative programme was jointly organised by the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Haflong Regional Committee, AAGSU Jatinga Regional Committee and AAGSU College Unit to honour the remarkable life and legacy of Captain Ram Singh Thakuri. The programme brought together representatives and office-bearers of AAGSU who gathered to remember his contribution to India’s freedom struggle and his lasting influence on military music and patriotic culture.
Captain Ram Singh Thakuri is widely remembered for his distinguished role as a musician and Bandmaster of the Indian National Army. His contribution to the musical tradition of the INA gave a powerful expression to the spirit of patriotism and the freedom movement. He is particularly associated with iconic patriotic compositions such as “Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja” and “Subh Sukh Chain,” which continue to hold a significant place in India’s patriotic musical heritage.
He also made notable contributions to the military rendition and musical arrangement of “Jana Gana Mana,” giving the national anthem a dignified ceremonial character. His artistic talent, discipline and dedication transformed music into a powerful medium of patriotism during a crucial period in India’s history.
The programme was attended by office-bearers and representatives from various AAGSU committees. From the AAGSU Dima Hasao District Committee, President Shri Uttam Gharti, Secretary Shri Bevakananda Joishi and Organising Secretary Shri Basu Joishi were present. The Haflong Regional Committee was represented by Advisor Shri Probin Joishi, President Shri Bishal Joishi, Vice President Shri Bikram Chetri, Secretary Shri Rupak Sharma, Assistant Secretary Shri Uday Rai, Assistant Organisation Secretary Shri Sujal Joishi and Education Secretary Shri Bishal Chetri.
From the AAGSU College Unit, President Shri Debendra Sharma attended the programme.
The gathering paid heartfelt tribute to Captain Ram Singh Thakuri, recalling his courage, dedication, patriotic spirit and immense contribution to the nation and the Indian freedom struggle. Speakers highlighted the importance of preserving the history and legacy of personalities who made significant contributions to the nation while also inspiring younger generations to learn about their sacrifices and achievements.
The programme also emphasised the importance of passing Captain Ram Singh Thakuri’s rich legacy to future generations. His contribution as a Gorkha freedom fighter and musician continues to serve as a source of pride and inspiration for the Gorkha community and the nation as a whole.
