Biswanath Chariali, Assam – The Biswanath College Students’ Union election for the session 2025–26 concluded with a landmark victory for the Gorkha community, as Mousam Sarmah, a student of B.A. 5th Semester, emerged victorious in the race for the President’s post. This is the first time in the college’s history that a candidate supported by the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) has claimed the top position, marking a defining moment in campus politics.
Sarmah secured an impressive 1053 votes, the highest in the entire election, signaling overwhelming support from the student body. His win has been hailed as a turning point for the AAGSU unit on campus, which has been steadily strengthening its presence over the years.
Having first served as General Secretary and later as the President of the AAGSU Biswanath College Unit for more than two years, Mousam has consistently shown dedication and leadership. His victory reinforces the belief that commitment and hard work ultimately lead to meaningful results.
For many within the AAGSU circle, the result carried deep emotion. Last year’s loss of 2 out of 4 contested posts was a difficult moment and remained fresh in memory. This election, however, transformed that frustration into triumph.
Not only did Mousam secure the highest vote margin, but both AAGSU-backed candidates clinched strong victories:
Mousam Sarmah: 1053 votes
Darshana Devi: 1021 votes
Out of a total of 1399 votes, both candidates winning with such significant margins is being viewed as a resounding expression of student confidence.
With Darshana Devi’s win, AAGSU-supported candidates have now continued their streak for four consecutive years in the post of Girls’ Common Room Secretary, adding to the continuity of leadership and influence.
The 2025–26 election results signify more than a change in office bearers. They represent renewed unity, growing participation, and a rising voice of the Gorkha student community in Biswanath College. As Mousam prepares to assume the role of President, expectations are high for a more inclusive, proactive, and student-focused union.
